Gaming clans necessary?

Is gaming clans really necessary to enjoy a game? Once I thought not and that gaming clans were just a bunch of fanatics who took playing games to seriously. That all changed when I got World in Conflict, I couldn't stand the noobs/ heavy arty players in the game and I wanted a more competitive feel where everybody knew what they were doing. So I joined a clan called The Art of Warfare. I thought this clan would practice 24/7 and be like the fanatics I thought clans were but they weren't. They only scheduled 2 one hour practices a week (I play more than that) and they were all great players. What was even better this clan plays other games too, from Battlefield to WOW. Overall the clan is 500+ members so you can always find a game to play with them. I think once you play with a group of players who think like you and know how you play, you can't go back to playing with the raw masses and expect the same kind of results. I achieved many high scores throughout many games, especially wic without stat padding because these guys were simply playing correctly and as a team. I also learned tips and tactics for many games, and they definitely improved my skill. So guys don't hesitate to join a clan, they are basically just a bunch of people to have fun with, much like NPR. There are clans out there who are hardcore that may deter the average player, but there are also clans who just want to have fun and dont require a skill level to get in. Two clans that are like this are The Art of Warfare and another clan which we frequently face in WIC Angels of Death. These clans play multiple games and play new games as soon as they come out (Age of Conan is already being played by TAW). So there are no worries if you want to start playing a different game with them.

I think there is a bit of a negative stigma regarding clans, as you identified. Quite what can be done to turn that around, I don't know.
But yes, playing in a clan is so much more entertaining than soloing things.
Keep your eyes peeled for the average gamers.
Nothing's broken, it's just functioning differently.
